Having trouble connecting your email account with SMTP? Here are the most common reasons an SMTP connection fails in Dubsado, and how to fix each one.
You'll find the SMTP connection form from Messages ➔ Settings or Settings ➔ Emails. Both open the same Emails page, where you can connect your email account with SMTP.
Try connecting with Other
If you selected a named provider (GoDaddy, iCloud, Yahoo, or AOL) and got an error, the most common fix is to switch to the Other option and enter your connection details manually.
Named providers only ask for a Username and Password/ App password. Selecting Other reveals additional fields: Username, Password, Server name, a Port you choose from a dropdown, and a Use SSL toggle. If your provider isn't GoDaddy, iCloud, Yahoo, or AOL, including hosts like Bluehost, DreamHost, HostGator, Namecheap, or SiteGround, Other is also how you connect it.
Your email provider determines the correct server name and port, so check with your provider or look up the server names and port numbers for common providers.
When you select Other, you'll also enter a Server name and choose a Port, and you can turn Use SSL on or off. If one combination fails, try another port with SSL on, then off.
Use an app-specific password
If you're certain your username and password are correct but the connection still fails, your provider may require an app-specific password instead of your regular login password. This is a security measure some email providers use for third-party apps like Dubsado, and it's generated in your provider's account settings rather than typed in from memory.
Providers that commonly require an app-specific password include Apple/iCloud, Yahoo, and Zoho. Check your provider's help center for instructions on generating one, then enter that password in Dubsado in place of your normal password.
Check for autofilled credentials
If your username and password appear pre-filled as soon as you select a provider, your browser may be autofilling your Dubsado login instead of your email provider's credentials. Delete the autofilled text and manually type in your email provider's username and password.
FAQ
I don't see my email provider in the list. What do I do?
The dropdown lists GoDaddy, iCloud, Yahoo, and AOL. For any other provider, choose Other and enter your server name and port manually. Your provider determines those values, and the server names and port numbers article lists common ones.
Which port should I use?
The Port dropdown offers 26, 465, and 587. The right one depends on your provider and whether SSL is on. If one fails, try another with Use SSL toggled on, then off. Port and SSL options only appear when you select Other.
My username and password are correct, but it still won't connect.
Your provider may require an app-specific password. Generate one in your email provider's account settings and enter it in place of your usual password.
Why are my Dubsado login details showing up in the connection form?
Your browser's autofill may be pre-populating the fields. Delete the pre-filled text and manually type in your email provider's credentials.
