Transaction receipts

How Dubsado Payments automatically emails a transaction receipt to a client after each payment, including what appears on the receipt and how to avoid duplicate receipts from Stripe.

Written by Trevor

Automatic transaction receipts are exclusive to Dubsado Payments powered by Stripe, and are not available when connected with other payment processors.

When a client makes a payment, Dubsado automatically emails a receipt to the client for their transaction.

How transaction receipts work

Transaction receipts require no setup. When you're connected to Dubsado Payments, transaction receipts are on by default.

You won't be able to edit or turn off transaction receipts. That said, transaction receipts are part of what keeps you compliant if you choose to enable surcharging.

After a payment is recorded, the transaction receipt is automatically generated and sent using your connected email account (the email account found within Settings ➔ Emails, or Messages ➔ Settings).

To view a sent transaction receipt, open the project of a client who has made a payment. The transaction receipt is listed under the Messages tab, alongside your other sent emails.

Transaction receipt layout

Your brand logo displays at the top of the receipt, with a thank-you message below it that includes the client's first name.

The total is then listed along with your brand name and a breakdown of the transaction:

  • the exact date and time of the transaction

  • payment method

  • a surcharge fee (if applicable)

  • total amount paid

Below the breakdown, clients can click the View invoice link to go directly to the invoice they made a payment on.

At the bottom of the receipt, clients are directed to reach out to your brand email address (Settings ➔ Business Info) if they have any questions.

Transaction receipts with surcharging

If a surcharge was collected on a transaction, the surcharge amount is itemized separately on the receipt.

An itemized transaction receipt with the surcharge shown separately is required to stay compliant with surcharging regulations, so this line item always appears on the receipt when a surcharge was collected. If you're not sure how surcharging works, it's worth reviewing before you turn it on.

Stripe receipts

Separate from Dubsado's automatic transaction receipts, Stripe also lets you automatically generate payment receipts of its own. Leaving Stripe's receipts turned on means your clients receive duplicate receipts for payments accepted through Dubsado Payments.

We recommend taking a moment to double check your settings within Stripe.

  1. Log in to your Stripe account and go to Settings ➔ Business.

  2. Click the dropdown menu under "Business" at the top of the page, then select Customer emails.

  3. Toggle the Successful payments option off if it's enabled. This disables Stripe's automatic receipts.

FAQ

If I manually log a payment, such as when a client pays with a check, will my client still receive a transaction receipt automatically?

Manually logging a payment will not trigger an automatic transaction receipt. Transaction receipts are only sent automatically for payments accepted through Dubsado Payments powered by Stripe.

If you'd like to send your client a receipt after manually logging a payment, you can email them a link to their invoice, which shows the manual payment.

Why can't I edit or customize how the receipts appear?

To maintain consistency and transparency, transaction receipts are standardized. Your brand logo still appears on the receipt, and your brand color is used on the View invoice button.

Will my address appear on my transaction receipts?

No. Your address does not appear on your transaction receipts.
